In the simplest terms, Harkness is a way learning based upon discussion, or conversation, among students. It is predicated on the assumption that students have prepared the text before class and are ready to share and develop ideas with their classmates. This is a dynamic environment that allows students to explore multiple directions of inquiry. As there are as many directions as students at the table, having a common foundation upon which to build a constructive discussion is essential. The following are some basic principles of discussion that may help students to work effectively and to know when they are behaving in a productive manner.
